Dave is a member of use MY data, the only independent movement in the UK that focuses on the use of patient data to save lives and improve outcomes. As an Executive Group Member, Dave plays a crucial role in setting use MY data’s priorities, actions, and activities, and advising the Secretariat by representation of the members.
Healthcare research relies heavily on both patient and scientific data to make new treatment discoveries that can save lives. Dave is passionate about helping the public and patients understand the importance of data for their own healthcare and for future patients.
Dave’s involvement in the patient data field began after his treatment for oesophageal cancer in August 2006. Following his recovery, he started supporting new patients joining research studies and trials. To better support these patients, Dave joined the Surrey, West Sussex, and Hampshire Cancer Partnership Research Group (SWSH CPRG), where he helped provide information to help patients make informed decisions about participating in trials.
From 2009 Dave has stood as a Patient and currently is the Rest of England Governor at the Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust.
Dave has had several Trustee and Chair roles in the cancer charity world and is currently Vice Chair of Digestive Cancers Europe (DiCE) and Chair of Independent Cancer Patients’ Voice (ICPV) for whom he facilitates the VOICE (Vision On Information, Confidence and Engagement) course at the Barts Cancer Institute.
Dave is married with two daughters and three grandchildren. His hobbies include photography, walking, and growing produce on his allotment.
