Abstract
Public involvement in sensitive data research can take many forms, in this participative workshop City as Lab uses its novel geographic approach to data presentation and discussion to connect with the public in a relatable way.
Using the award-winning Nottingham 3-D map or PARM (projection augmented relief model*) City as Lab delivered in person workshops with people from under-served communities as part of the TREvolution project. The PEDRI Standards to Impact fund enabled TREvolution’s Public Advisory Group to work directly with feedback from these sessions to build a wider engagement programme based on the thoughts of people whose voices have often not been heard in data research.
This work led to City as Lab now working alongside the Federated Research Community Group, engaging public and professional audiences in shaping the development of Federated Analysis techniques.
During this interactive session, City as Lab and TREvolution will present the methodology of PARM in context with public engagement in data research and show the impact that practical tools in a co-productive environment can have.
Attendees will have the opportunity to get hands-on with the relief model and are invited to explore curated datasets which have been used in research and public displays.
*Projection Augmented Relief Models (PARMs) allows audiences to engage with spatial data through a combination of physical models, projection and traditional screen-based techniques. PARMs provide a grounding object to focus upon which can increase engagement with content while simultaneously removing direct attention from other attendees when making contributions. Combinations of animatics and static imagery can be displayed on either screen or model, enhancing the user experience and sense of curiosity. The combination of familiarity with the 3-D structure of a geographic area and the projection of data allows audiences to self-orient, allowing for increased comprehension and connectivity with the presentation.
